Different Is Good: Celebrating the many ways we experience strength, care, and connection.

The inspiration for this blog came from an unexpected source: our intern, JR.

During a recent monthly planning meeting, we were discussing some prompts Alli had presented to us. We talked about our strengths and weaknesses, where we feel most capable, where we feel energized, and where we want to take more ownership. It was one of those conversations that allows you to step back and appreciate what everyone brings to the table.

As the newest member of the room, JR asked if he could share an observation.

He said that Alli, Kristin, Ashton, Tyler, and I work so well together because we are all different.

At first, it seemed like such a simple statement. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how true it is.

We don't think the same. We don't communicate the same. We don't have the same personalities, interests, or clinical strengths.

Some of us are 6'2". Some of us are 5'. Some of us can do the splits (JR, Tyler, and me), and some of us have pulled a hamstring trying. Some of us are raising kids, while others are raising fur babies. We all have different backgrounds, different experiences, and different perspectives.

The one thing we can all agree on? Quality care for our patients and Blackhole Bakery.

Each of us brings something unique to Empowered, and I think our patients are better because of it.

Of course, being different can come with challenges. Different perspectives can lead to disagreements. Different communication styles can sometimes require a little more understanding. Different strengths mean we may approach a problem from completely different angles.

But that's okay.

In fact, I think that's exactly what makes Empowered work. It's one of the many reasons I love it here.

One thing that stands out about our team is that there is very little ego within our walls. As clinicians, we recognize that none of us has all the answers, and we're okay with that. We thrive when collaborating. We regularly ask each other questions, seek second opinions, and bounce ideas off one another. We intentionally set aside time to discuss patient cases because we know that a fresh perspective can sometimes make all the difference.

No one is trying to be the smartest person in the room.

We're simply trying to provide the best care possible for the patient in front of us.

When one therapist feels stuck, another may have an idea. When one therapist has a blind spot, another may see an opportunity. When one person feels drained by a task, someone else may be energized by it. Our differences don't weaken our team. They strengthen it.

And ultimately, our patients benefit from that.

One of the ways this philosophy shows up at Empowered starts before a patient ever walks through our doors.

When someone reaches out to become a patient, Alli personally completes a phone consultation with them. The purpose isn't to start their plan of care. It isn't to prescribe exercises or begin treatment. It's to listen.

She wants to understand their story, their goals, their personality, and what they're hoping to accomplish.

Why?

Because she wants every patient to start their journey with the therapist who is best equipped to help them succeed.

Most physical therapy clinics schedule evaluations based on who has the first available opening. The patient is simply assigned to the next therapist on the schedule.

At Empowered, we do things differently.

While every therapist at Empowered shares the same commitment to excellent patient care, each of us brings a different personality, communication style, and life experience to the therapeutic relationship. Sometimes the best fit comes down to finding the therapist whose approach and perspective will resonate most with that individual patient.

Rather than treating therapists as interchangeable, we take the time to thoughtfully pair patients with the therapist who we believe will best meet their needs.

That level of intentionality isn't something you find everywhere.

The more I reflect on JR's observation, the more I appreciate it.

The goal at Empowered has never been to fit everyone into the same mold. It's to create a team where each person can bring their own strengths, perspectives, and personality while working toward a shared mission.

Maybe that's what makes Empowered special.

Not that we're all the same.

But that we trust each other enough to be different.

Because different isn't something to overcome.

Different is good.
